===============================================
MAIL SYSTEM - OVERVIEW
===============================================
The Source MAIL System is entered by typing "MAIL" at the system
level prompt (>). Using this mail system, one person can send a text
message to another person, group of people and/or distribution lists.
The recipient(s) can read the message as their schedule permits or
requires. This mail system will permit electronic communication among
all users with valid mail accounts.
SENDING MESSAGES
================
When sending messages, the user may specify up to 1000 names for
mail distribution along with options for:
Carbon copies
Blind copies
Acknowledgement requested
Express
Password required
Date Activated - NOTE: The DA option will be added at a later date.
READING MESSAGES
================
When reading messages, the user is shown a "header", consisting of
two lines of information about the mail item:
From: Posted: [weekday] [date] [time]
Subject:
The Subject line is entered by the sender and can be used as a source
for electronically filing the item as well as a source of prioritizing the
handling of received messages.
Many options are also offered to allow the user to specify types of
mail items to be read, such as current or filed mail, mail from a specific
individual or on a particular subject.
Once the header is displayed, a number of options are offered, among
them those which allow the reader to:
Reply to the sender
Forward the message to others
Electronically file the message
Go on to the next message
Delete the message
SCANNING MESSAGES
=================
Scanning offers a quick way of reviewing your current mail or other
types of mail. Many options are given for specifying a scan as well as
processing a scanned item. MAIL may be scanned by Subject Line, by
entering SU in the scan command line. Scanned items will include both
current and filed mail. MAIL also may be scanned by Category. This
option applies only to filed MAIL. Enter a category name in your Scan
command line to scan a specific folder of stored messages. A Scanning
by Text option will be available at a later date.
DISPLAYING MESSAGES
===================
The DISPLAY command and options will be available at a later date.

INSTRUCTIONS
============
SourceMail provides many options for sending, reading and filing
your electronic mail. The primary features fall under the main prompt
in the system:
<S>end, <R>ead, an, <D>isplay or <Q>uit:
You can type HELP (or H) at this or any prompt in the mail program to get
an explanation of your options.
To get a detailed explanation of the most important commands, you may
enter HELP followed by any of the commands listed here. This (HELP Command)
string is accepted at all prompts, and will display the help file you request,
regardless of where you are in SourceMail.

SENDING MAIL
============
Before sending any letter you must first address it and write it.
SourceMail works precisely the same way.
Enter SEND or S at <S>end, <R>ead, an, <D>isplay or <Q>uit: whether
you're sending a letter to one person or to a special mail distribution
list you've already created. (See DISTRIBUTION LISTS for details.)
- ADDRESSING YOUR LETTER -
The two things you must know before entering your message is the ID Number of
the person you are writing to and the subject of your letter. The program will
ask you for this information, so be prepared. (BE SURE YOUR SUBJECT IS LESS
THAN ONE LINE, OR IT WILL BE TRUNCATED.)
If you are sending mail to a Distribution list in the Mail.Ref file you
already created, just enter the filename of the list at "To:", and SourceMail
will automatically send it to each of the addresses in the file.
If you are sending mail to a Mailing List outside your Mail.Ref file, you
must enter it like this:
To: ML (Filename)
As in the case of a Distribution List, SourceMail will automatically send
your message to each person in the Mailing List file.
- WRITING YOUR LETTER -
After you answer these questions the prompt "Enter Text" will appear. Enter
your message exactly the way you want it to appear to the reader. DO NOT LET A
LINE EXCEED 120 CHARACTERS BEFORE PRESSING RETURN or once again, your message
will be truncated.
If you want to include, as part of your text, a file that is in your File
Directory, you will have to LOAD it after the ENTER TEXT prompt displays.
Just type .LOAD (filename) and it will be part of your message.
When you are done entering your message, simply type .S or .SEND and consider
your letter mailed!
(Enter HELP SEND for details on the additional sending features available.)
- CREATING DISTRIBUTION LISTS -
If you have lengthy mailing lists, SourceMail's Mail.Ref file is the
answer to your worries.
SourceMail will search your File Directory for a MAIL.REF file in which
several distribution lists may reside. Just put the name of the list at
the left margin, followed by each User ID to be included. Like this:
Northeast TCC901 ST1120 TCX958 CJG000
Southeast RVX224 ST3940 TCA091 TCC225 STM333
Home ST1086
Now you have three different distribution lists in your MAIL.REF file.
To create your MAIL.REF file, type ED at command level, and enter each
distribution list as demonstrated above. When you are finished, type
FILE MAIL.REF at the left margin, and voila! Update or change your MAIL.REF
File using the System Text Editor.
- MAILING LISTS -
A Mailing List is the same as a Distribution List, only it resides
in your User File Directory, not your MAIL.REF file. Just enter your
mailing list under any file name you choose, and when it comes time to
use it, type ML before the filename at the "TO:" prompt.
READING MAIL
============
The READ command is your gateway to reading everything you have received
via SourceMail. You can read unread letters, already read letters, and
filed letters.
In addition, you can forward a letter to someone else, immediately reply to
the letter you are reading, or file a letter several ways. You may use any
of the features listed here at -MORE- and DISPOSITION: while reading mail.
FO (User ID) - To forward the letter to the User ID you enter
<RE>ply - To send a reply to the letter you are reading
FILE - To store the letter you are reading in your
Filing Cabinet
FILE IN (Category) - To store the letter you are reading in an existing
Category in your Filing Cabinet
SAVE (Filename) - To file the letter you are reading in your User
File Directory
SAVE IN (Filename) - To file the letter you are reading in an existing
file in your User File Directory
Many of the READ commands are accepted only as commands strings from Command
Level or at the first prompt, <S>end, <R>ead, an, <D>isplay or <Q>uit.
Enter READ followed by any of the commands listed here (on the same line)
for the desired results:
UNREAD to read the letters in your mailbox that you have not yet read.
FILE to read the letters you have filed in your filing cabinet after
reading them earlier.
FILE (Category) to read letters you have filed in a specific category in
your filing cabinet.
FR (ID #) to read letters from the User ID you enter.
DA (DD MMM YY) to read letters sent on the date you enter.
SU (Keyword) to read letters that contain the keyword you enter in their
SUBJECT line.
EX to read letters that were sent to you by EXPRESS SourceMail.
EX UNREAD to read letters you have not yet read that were sent to you
by EXPRESS SourceMail.
Of course, you can always enter READ alone, to see letters not yet filed or
deleted from your mailbox.
SCANNING MAIL
=============
The SCAN command allows you to see the "header" of each letter in your mailbox
or filing cabinet without making you read each one. Use SCAN or SC to see the
account number of the sender, the subject line, and the date and time the
letter was sent.
EX: 1) From: TCA123 --EXPRESS--
On: 20 OCT 1982 At: 18:00 Copy:CC
To: TCA456 CC:TCA789
Subject: Meeting on Friday
<R>ead or <D>elete by number:
All of the commands accepted for READ are valid SCAN commands, only each
header in your SCAN list will have a number corresponding to it. You must
read or delete the letters you want by entering the corresponding numbers
after the complete scan list is displayed. You will be prompted to make
your selection at the proper time.
DISPLAY
=======
The DISPLAY command refers to files in your SourceMail Filing Cabinet and
your Distribution List(s). Use it when you want to see:
- the contents of your filing cabinet
- the contents of each Distribution List in your MAIL.REF file
You will be asked which one you want displayed like this:
<F>iles or <D>istribution list?
Select the one you want.
